Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the ability to contest specific rulings from the official, following the system currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
